Answered: How many people are active in the Occupy movement? Are there any good estimates?

The #OccupyInfo Working Group has been working on a Consensus Census to start figuring how to get a better sense of this question.

A big issue we're coming into is how do you qualify the dif types of participants-
Date of introduction to #OWS & #OccupyWallStreet seems to be the best working model so far.

Answered: What do you tell people who ask how they can help/how their friends can help etc.?

They could post responses after news articles that are positive and informed to counteract the negative posts.

They could donate if there was a place to donate where the funds would actually get used for the movement. I would not know where to tell them to donate.

Shifts for supporters

Dear Occupy,

Would Occupy consider opening up a shift sign-up for community supporters? Community leaders and friends could schedule time to stand in solidarity and support of your efforts. It could be done with an open source time scheduler. (unlike doodle.com or other). Often you have a wide-range of supporters who might stand with you in support if they had a public sign-up for a specific time. This could be done on rotation. And, would be in addition to your mass meeting and general assemblies.

Note: a community friend asked me to post on their behalf.

Fans!
Answered: Should we create a website that profiles individuals within the movement telling their personal stories?

I think we really should, as this individualizes the movement, and puts names and stories behind the faces of the individuals that are involved in the movement. Although I am not in NYC,as of yet, I would be more than happy to help out feel free to email me on this. tracy.lubbehusen@gmail.com

Answered: Should we do a series of profiles on New Yorkers in the 1% and their misdeeds?

I had an idea to do a "Know Your Shadowy Billionaires" quiz earlier. Specific to campaign finance but could be expanded to general plutocratic corruption.

(Do you know which billionaire political meddler has an opera house named for him?)

Answered: Should occupywallstreet.net have a page dedicated to political prisoners?

Could be nice if it showed the average prison time, realtime ticker of estimated new prisioners in last week, etc. I guess the risk is we could scare people from their willingness to participate.

Answered: What can occupiers do as positve actions in their communities? lets do something!

5 of us moved into a run down house and are renovating it. We have built some great reciprical relationships. With those relationships we have been invited to take some advocacy stands along with some long time activists. We pick up trash, fix peoples windows, we will mow old lady's lawns and what not. It's working out really well so far. We also pass out a lot of flyers. The industrial prison complex and the closing of some recreational centers are issues which we are organizing on right now a little.

Answered: Where do we strike the balance between popularity and unpopular truths?

Lets not handicap ourselfs by holding hate and fundamental views. If a potential enemy does something benficial for the movement we should encourage more of this, take advantage of it. There's no benefit to judging people in permanent absolutes.

We have to deal with and indeed 'flourish' within the present contraints of the current system. Some may be against the Capitalist system, but they don't turn up in rags and abstain from technology just because they would ideally only use items from an ethically producing supplier/system.

The constraints in this case are the education and awareness of society. People are highly suspectible and responsiive to populist attraction and hierachy. Lets use this.

Answered: What is your activism experience outside of OWS?

I was raised in the activist mindset... I remember being carried on my parents' shoulders at marches as a toddler.

Been involved to varying degrees with:

Reclaim The Streets
Cures Not Wars
End The Fed
Tea Party (pre-Koch Bros.)
The Phun Phactory (Queens based youth space and graffiti museum/gallery)
We Are Change

If nothing else, I try to always keep some involvement going because my mom would be disappointed if I quit activism. =D
